Woodforde Perfumery
This was a change to the published programme.
John Brewer from Woodforde Perfumery, Church St, Sidmouth enlightened us on the history of perfume and gave us the opportunity to smell several scents.
The ancient Greek and Roman civilisations used perfumed oils on leather scented gloves. The Arabs later developed the process of distillation, Attar of Roses is distilled rose oil (Attar is an Arabic word meaning 'scent').The Crusaders brought scented gloves back to Europe. It was the French who started the perfume revolution by using scent on cloth (a toile) rather than leather gloves and Eau de Toilette was born.
The big change in perfume occurred in 1885 when synthetic musk was developed, this revolutionised the perfume industry with more and more synthetic scents being cheaply available. There are approx 300 natural scents and 5000 synthetic scents with more being developed each year.
