Jane Austen's Journeys
A talk by Hazel Jones
'Jane Austen's Journeys' was the subject of Hazel Jones' talk. It is the bicentenary of her death and aficionados are always interested in details of her life. She believed that 'If a young lady seeks adventure, she needs to venture abroad.' 'Abroad' to Jane meant 'away from home' rather than to another country as travel to Europe was impossible due to our war with France. Her travels and those of the heroines of her novels, were mostly restricted to the southern counties of England, but her descriptions of the different types of horse-drawn vehicles which reflected the status of their owners is reminiscent of the way people can be judged by the cars they drive today.
