'OPEN MEETING' SS GREAT BRITAIN
Presentation by Ian Caskie ' From Launch to Re-Launch', a talk on Brunel's SS Great Britain.
Built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1830, it was the first propeller-driven, iron hulled ocean-going steamship. In the early 1850's it sailed from Australia with cargoes of gold and later became a passenger ship.During its 170 years as a working ship, it travelled millions of miles, carried 3,000 tons of oil and went round the world 32 times. Sadly, it ended its working life beached and rotting in the Falklands. In 1970 it was brought home to Bristol where it has since been restored to its former glory. A group of members will visit it on the 22nd June.
