Presentation on Earthquakes and volcanoes in italy
A very interesting and informative talk that explained how an earthquake starts which is often with the sea floor spreading causing land to be moved and forced upwards. We learnt that Northern Italy is actually African. The fault line throughout Italy is known as cataclysmic. Earthquakes are measured on the Richter Scale and when readings are registered as 7, 8 and 9 they are very dangerous.
There have been a number of recorded earthquakes across the world that have caused a great deal of damage - for example - New Zealand measuring 6.1, Mexico 8.1, Fukushima in Japan 9.1 and the Tsunami in Thailand 9.2.
We were shown footage of a church in Assisi as it was hit by an earthquake measuring 5.5 on the richter scale and sadly 4 people lost their lives as the church crumbled and fell to the ground.
There are three active volcanoes in Italy - Mount Etna, Vesuvius and Strombeli, although they have not erupted in recent years.
