MY CITY AND GUILDS PORTFOLIO
When Grace Essex decided to enrol for the City & Guilds Diploma in Embroidery, she knew it would be hard work as it was equivalent to 2nd year degree level. She had to produce four large projects with the stipulation that they must be useless and not to be afraid to experiment and try different things.inspired by the story of tobias and the angel, she chose the theme of pathways.
She left some calico in a compost heap to see what designs and pathways would be left by insects, moulds and the process of decomposition. The resulting patterns were added to with beads, chiffon leaves and embroidery to create the unusual design seen in the 2nd photo.
The shapes used for the lovely white gauntlet in the 4th photo were inspired by the shapes of salmon bones.we all had the chance to admire the skilful needlework samples in her portfolio during the break.
Beryl Macindoe then showed us the needlework project she had done with the local girl guides.
They had made drawstring bags containing rag dolls dressed as suffragettes, banners and hats in the suffragette colours of green, purple and white for use in history lessons in the local primary schools.
Both talks were fascinating and delivered by very inspirational ladies.
