Antiques Quiz
Mr J W Whitton FRICS provided us with an insight into the world of antiques. As well as evaluating the range of objects brought along by our members he also brought some interesting and unusual objects for us to view.
He explained the hallmarks on silver and was pleased to find that some of the objects had been hallmarked in Exeter. Exeter had a silver assay office from 1580 to 1880 and its hallmark is the three towers of Exeter castle. He was able to show us 3 different styles of Vesta boxes and explained the differences in their value.
He brought a few mystery objects we were able to guess as a marrow spoon, a watch stand and a sugar cutter.
And did you know the correct name for a musical box is a 'mandiville'
