Antiques Quiz

Mr J W Whitton FRICS provided us with an insight into the world of antiques. As well as evaluating the range of objects brought along by our members he also brought some interesting and unusual objects for us to view.

He explained the hallmarks on silver and was pleased to find that some of the objects had been hallmarked in Exeter. Exeter had a silver assay office from 1580 to 1880 and its hallmark is the three towers of Exeter castle. He was able to show us 3 different styles of Vesta boxes and explained the differences in their value.

He brought a few mystery objects we were able to guess as a marrow spoon, a watch stand and a sugar cutter.
And did you know the correct name for a musical box is a 'mandiville'

Business

Don't forget your 'Secret Santa' present (£3-£5) for the Christmas party.

Beryl has written to EDDC regarding the felling of the 75th anniversary tree near Sidford Surgery.

Barbara reminded us that subscriptions of £36 are due in January. Please put your cheque in an envelope with your name, address, telephone number and email address on the outside.

Ideas for celebrating the WI centenary are :
  • decorating the tree outside St Peter's church
  • planting an ornamental tree in the church yard
  • a new bench at St Steven's Cross
  • making a wall hanging for the hall

The WI AGM will be broadcast at Kennaway House on 4th June, cost £2.50.

There will be a social skittles evening on 26th Nov at the Rising Sun, Sidford.
The Devon area skittles is on Tues 27th Jan (11am - 3pm) at the Otter Inn, Colaton Raleigh. Cost £5 includes a light lunch.

Following on from her attendance at the open meetings Claire gave a comprehensive update on the Health Care proposals. Beryl has written to express the group's feelings regarding the proposed closure of the Minor Injuries Unit.
