Lesley and Sue’s Denman Experience
Sue Cox and Lesley Ansell were awarded Denman bursaries and booked on the European Floral Design course - something that sounded very exciting and a skill that was very new to them. The course was run over 3 days and the tutor, David Martin was very knowledgeable and he passed on an enormous amount of tips, ideas, information and techniques.
Over the 3 days our class of 6 watched David demonstrate 7 floral designs, of which we made 4 ourselves. The photos are attached. We were challenged getting our creations in the car to take home but they have lasted well and we have been able to show them off to friends and family.
Our course started after breakfast at 9.15am and finished at 9.15 p.m. The course was quite intense but with meal breaks and a free hour after lunch the time flew by. The “classrooms” are in a separate building close to the main house and are very well equipped.
Accommodation is in buildings scattered around the grounds and in the main house, where the lounge, bar and dining room are also situated. The quality of food offered at each meal was a very high standard and the service was excellent.
There is a bar to relax in in the evenings and plenty of opportunity to explore the grounds, find out about the history of Denman and at meal times and breaks an opportunity to meet and chat to other WI members and to see their work on display at the end of their courses.
We both had a brilliant time, met some lovely people, learnt a new skill and came home with 4 beautiful floral designs. We are inspired to use the skills we have learnt to make floral arrangements at home from flowers in our gardens or from local shops. We cannot recommend Denman enough, everything is well organised and there are so many courses you can do, there is something for everyone.
If you are considering a course, please sign up and support Denman, we are sure you will enjoy the experience as much as we did. Denman maintenance costs are high and it is important that WI’s support Denman to enable it continue to run courses in the future.
