Waitrose
Margaret Hughes introduced us to the history of Waitrose and her work in the Operations section.
The Operations section is responsible for checking that all promotions, special offers and ticket prices are up to date and correct. Margaret manages the Community Matters initiative which gives £1000 per month to 3 local charities. They have given £78,000 to the community over the last 7 years.
On its first day of trading in 1864 at its Oxford St store John Lewis took 16s 11d. Managed by John Lewis and later his three sons it grew and bought out Peter Jones in 1905. In 1914 John Lewis handed control of Peter Jones to his youngest son John Spedan Lewis who set up staff committees and developed the ethos that in 1925 become the first Trust of the John Lewis partnership.
In 1937 the Trust acquired the 10 Waitrose grocery stores that were founded by Wallis Waite and John Rose. It opened the first supermarket in 1955 and now has more than 300.
We were also able to taste a selection of Waitrose own label wines brought along by Simon.
